First new to Nikon/Nikkor. Currently I have the Z 24-70/2.8 S which I luckily found used to support my new Z9. The Z9 came several months earlier than expected so that was what I have. In the mean time I was originally thinking about getting the Z 24-120/4 S since I was building the kit for wildlife and BIF. The 24-70 f2.8S is quite literally a bag of f2.8 primes in the one lens. It has true professional performance as far as wide open sharpness, edge to edge sharpness, sharpness at all focal lengths, all apertures and all camera to subject distances. It has very nice bokeh and overall IQ. It is a remarkable lens, IMO. For those of you who have either the Z 24 - 50 f/4 ~ f/6.3 or the 24 - 70 f/4 , what factors went into your decision to buy either as far as image quality , handling , etc. ? Honestly I bought the 24-70F4 waiting for the 2.8 and the 24-120 or 24-105 to arrive as that's the way it has "Always been". Plenty of zoom, not heavy, and easily replaced aka lower financial burden if I drop it, lose it, etc compared to the 24-70 f2.8but I know I will ultimately be disappointed with the pictures I take with it compared to my 85 mm f1.8. Los Angeles, California. Mar 3, 2012. #3. The 24-120 is a totally different type of lens. If you use f/2.8 a lot, to freeze action, or to cream backgrounds, the 24-120 won't satisfy you. However, if you want more in focus, and your subjects aren't moving, VR would be more useful than f/2.8. .
